    • over 1,000 bars, cafés and restaurants

OUR TIPS:

Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument of the Battle of the Nations) – a powerful, colossal, national monument
The monument commemorates 18th October 1813, when Prussian, Russian, Austrian and Swedish troops ended Napoleon’s dominance of Europe at the gates of Leipzig. The period before and after the war of liberation is brought to life with original uniforms, weapons, medals, coins and documents. The view of Leipzig and the surrounding area from the monument’s 91 metre high viewing platform is amazing.

Gewandhaus Orchestra – finest classical music
“Res severa verum gaudium“ (true pleasure is a serious business) has been the motto of the renowned Gewandhaus Orchestra since the mid-19th century. Today, it ranks not only as one of the very best orchestras but also, with a total of 175 musicians, as the biggest professional orchestra in the world. The orchestra gained its excellent reputation thanks to its outstanding musical quality; the result of working together over many years with distinguished musicians, such as Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter and Kurt Masur as its principle conductors. Today, Riccardo Chailly, who took over as music director of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in 2005, continues this tradition of providing the finest listening pleasure in the world of classical music. The orchestra is based in the “Gewandhaus“ at Leipzig's Augustusplatz. The concert hall was opened here in 1981 and, since then, has attracted well over 10 million music lovers.

Leipzig Opera House
Leipzig Opera House bears testament to Leipzig’s 300-year-long tradition of nurturing opera. The Leipzig Opera does not have an orchestra of its own, the Gewandhausorchester traditionally plays at the Opera as well. Both auditoria face Leipzig’s Augustusplatz. Following the destruction of the Neues Theater on Augustusplatz, which had been used since 1868 for theatrical and operatic performances, during the Second World War, a modern opera house, the Leipzig Opera House was built on the same spot between 1956-1960, reprising the late-classical design of the previous structure.

Leipzig Art Museum
The foundation stone for this, the first major new art gallery and museum to be built in the new German States, was laid on 7 June 2000. Conceived as a cube with a glass exterior skin, its terraces, courtyards flooded with natural light and the large museum hall, which break up the interior space, create variety and surprising perspectives as you walk through the building. Visitors remain in constant contact with the city outside through the glass facade as they walk around.

Krystallpalast Varieté – Theatre of the senses
“If anyone wants to invite business partners or friends for a meal in Leipzig, and would like to offer them something more than the noisy conviviality of a local pub, then they go to the Krystallpalast Varieté. Here the local inhabitants and their guests can have a three course meal in the slightly dusky elegance of an intimate little theatre and enjoy comedy, cabaret and artistry at its finest.” (The Stuttgarter Zeitung newspaper). Let yourself be entertained and enchanted and let your taste buds be spoiled.
