Government debt and the euro crisis are confronting the Community of European states with challenges to its very existence. We are living in turbulent times, which are not only testing the resilience of monetary union, but also very clearly revealing the economic imbalances, and therefore the numerous- development disparities within the European Union. In the past, demands for concerted and sustainable action on the Continent have rarely been voiced as vehemently as now.

Acting together to achieve sustainable local and regional development in Europe is absolutely necessary if we are to achieve success. Important themes are currently at the focus of activities. These include the preparation of forward-looking and economically feasible mobility solutions for urban and rural areas, new strategic approaches to the local and regional energy supply as well as measures in the context of climate protection. Critical questions will be raised in the EU programming period 2014 to 2020, which will redefine the instruments and objectives for local and regional development.

euregia in Leipzig - which will take place in October 2014 for the 9th time - brings together experts from all parts of the Continent and is an ideal platform for developing new solutions to cope with future challenges. The latest research findings and best practice examples as well as innovative concepts and schemes are presented and experiences shared at this event - it is a unique opportunity for the international transfer of know-how that benefits all parties involved.
